Having grown through the ranks of Vitória de Guimarães, Duda had not yet played one single competitive senior game, when he was sold to Cádiz CF, then in the third-tier of Spanish football. In 2001–02, he switched to top flight Málaga CF and, after a loan move to Segunda División Levante UD, was everpresent in a team that achieved two consecutive 10th league places, also appearing in the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto.

In 2005–06, involved in a bitter contract dispute, Duda featured scarcely throughout the season as Málaga was relegated and, during the summer joined Andalusia neighbours Sevilla FC. Incidentally, his arrival coincided with the emergence of another left-footed player, Antonio Puerta (whom played as either left back or midfielder); after Puerta’s demise the following season, Duda also played backup, to Diego Capel.

With Capel firmly established as first-choice, Duda was loaned for 2008–09 to an old acquaintance, Málaga, in August 2008. During the season, he was an instrumental offensive element as the club narrowly missed on UEFA Cup qualification, with countryman Eliseu often playing in the other wing.
In late August 2009, after intense negotiations, Duda moved permanently to Málaga on a four-year contract, with Sevilla benefitting from a percentage of any future sale.

Rolando (Portuguese footballer)

After beginning his career in the youth ranks of lowly S.C. Campomaiorense, Rolando finished his football formation with Lisbon’s C.F. Os Belenenses, which he joined at nearly 18. In his first division debut, on 28 August 2004, he played 90 minutes and scored a goal in a 3–0 home win against C.S. Marítimo; he went on to become an essential defensive figure onwards, appearing in all 30 matches in 2007–08, as the club finished in eighth place.

On 15 April 2008, F.C. Porto confirmed that Rolando had agreed to part ways with Belenenses and join them on a four-year contract. In his first season, he quickly beat competition from veteran Pedro Emanuel, partnering Bruno Alves in the centre.

Bruno Eduardo Regufe Alves (born 27 November 1981 in Póvoa de Varzim) is a Portuguese footballer who currently plays for F.C. Porto, as a central defender.
Alves is noted for his strength, tough tackling and aerial ability, and is the younger brother of another footballer, AEK Athens’ Geraldo, also a central defender. He has paternal Brazilian ancestry.

After three consecutive loans, two in Portugal and another in the Greek Super League with AEK Athens, Alves returned to F.C. Porto in 2005–06, extending his contract until 2010, and battling for a first-team spot with Ricardo Costa and João Paulo. He played in seven league matches for the eventual champions, but was infamously sent off on 15 October 2005, in the 2–0 home loss against S.L. Benfica, after headbutting Nuno Gomes.

The Portugal national under-21 football team is the national under-21 football team of Portugal and is controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). They are nicknamed “Esperanças.” Esperança means hope, thus they are Portugal’s hopes for the future. In sports, “Esperança” comes before “Senior”.

Following the realignment of UEFA’s youth competitions in 1976, the Portuguese under-21 team was formed. Until 1994, the team had a rather poor record – failing to qualify for each of the first eight UEFA under-21 Championships. Since 1994, the team has improved its record greatly, qualifying for five of the next seven tournaments, including the 2006 finals.

Having qualified for the 2006 tournament finals, UEFA announced that Portugal would host the finals in May and June. From 2007 onwards, host nations will be announced before the qualification stage and will not need to qualify.

Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes, OIH (born 28 April 1973 in Ponta Delgada, Azores), commonly known as Pauleta (Portuguese pronunciation: [pauˈletɐ]), is a former Portuguese professional footballer, who played as a striker.

Pauleta scored 47 goals in 88 matches for the Portuguese national team, a national record at the time of his retirement. He played for his country in UEFA Euro 2000, the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

When selected for the latter competition, he was the only player to have never played in the Portuguese first division, having spent most of his professional career in Spain and France (12 years).

Euro 1992 qualifying

During the draws for the Euro 1992 qualifying, the Netherlands was seen as the strongest team besides Portugal. Greece, Finland and Malta were the other teams. With five wins and eleven points, the Portuguese ended second behind the Dutch, who had two more points than Portugal. A famous result in this campaign was the 1–0 home win against the Dutch.

They participated in the friendly 1992 U.S. Cup along with the host, USA, Italy and Ireland in a round robin tournament. Portugal finished last with one point (six behind winners United States) from a draw with Italy (0–0). The other two games were defeats with USA (1–0) and the Republic of Ireland (2–0).

For the ’94 World Cup qualification, Portugal played in the same group as Estonia, Italy, Malta, Scotland and Switzerland for the two highest places. They disappointed, ending in third with fourteen points and six wins, just two points behind winner’s Italy and one behind second-placed Switzerland. In the last game of the round, Portugal were defeated by Italy in Milan. The Selecção managed to win 1–0 against Switzerland and 5–0 against the Scots, both were home wins. The then manager, Carlos Queiroz, blamed the Football Federation for this failure, saying that “They should clean the mess that the Federation has.”

Eduardo dos Reis Carvalho, (born 19 September 1982 in Mirandela), simply known as Eduardo, is a Portuguese footballer who currently plays as a goalkeeper for S.C. Braga in the Portuguese Liga.

Club career

FC Porto’s victory over Arsenal at the Estadio do Dragao has given the Portuguese side a superb chance of progression to the next stage of the Champions League.

Indeed, it seems that each year the blue-and-whites have a new story to tell in Europe, and usually new storytellers doing so. That’s because each summer their talent pool, painstakingly assembled from across Portugal and South America, is drained by other, more financially potent clubs.

Will the same happen this year? Quite possibly. But in the meantime it’s important to highlight the players who made the difference for Porto against Arsenal, and indeed who have been making the difference all season, even as Porto struggle behind Braga and Benfica in their domestic league.

Ready for World Cup

Having qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Selecção das Quinas had its most successful decade to date, having qualified for all the editions of the World Cup and Euro Cup (Euro 2000, World Cup 2002, Euro 2004, World Cup 2006, Euro 2008, and World Cup 2010), along with Spain, Italy, Germany, and France, the only other four teams to have done so.

In the Final Draw, on 4th December 2009, Portugal was drawn in one of the toughest groups, the so called Group of Death where the Selecção das Quinas will be facing 5-time champions Brazil, Africa’s top contenders Côte d’Ivoire and 1966 opponents North Korea. The Group of death will be the most exciting groups to see in the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Portugal will first face Côte d’Ivoire on 15 June 2010 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, followed by North Korea on 21 June 2010 at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town and the last group match will be played against Brazil on 25 June 2010 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

And the winner is… Coimbra. On the third of March 30.000 supporters will probably fill the stands of the beautiful “Estádio Cidade de Coimbra” to watch the friendly match with the People’s Republic of China . I hope to be amongst them. 20:45 GMT on a Wednesday evening.

Besides China we are also set to face the Cape Verde Islands during the training period at Covilhã prior to departing for South Africa. Not really meant to test the readiness of the team I suppose, but to try out some of Queiroz’s tactical masterminded schemes… brace yourselves.

We will also face Mozambique some time after arriving in South-Africa. Mozambique recently played at the CAN 2010 with not much to show for it – 1 draw, 2 defeats, 2 goals scored, 7 goals conceded. But the match should provide us with a clearer view of Carlos Queiroz’s starting eleven.
